Hello All! Hello World!

On this past July 3rd (not that I believe it’s at all relevant but that date is not only my wedding anniversary but the anniversary of the deaths of both Jim Morrison and Brian Jones as well) a musician and artist I deeply admired died from complications due to alcohol addiction. Richard Swift was only 41 but he had already amassed an incredible and diverse body of work; sadly he leaves behind as well a wife and three daughters.

I believe I was introduced to his music sometime around 2003 when I saw him as the opening act for another great group of musicians, the Walkmen. At that time Swift’s debut The Novelist was just released and I’ve been following his career closely since, always wondering where his talents would twist and tumult next.

The following mix is just a brief smattering of that talent, and I need to mention that it does not feature any of the absolutely stunning production work he did for other artists such as: Damien Jurado; Foxygen; Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats; The Mynabirds; Valerie June; Laetitia Sadier; The Arcs; Hamilton Leithauser; and so many others. I urge you to check this stuff out (particularly his work with Jurado), and you should know that the man made incredible mixtapes (under the moniker Dance Contest Winner or Donald Fivepennies, or a whole bunch of others) as well made fantastic art and photography. This obviously troubled man had a true genius.

As he danced so easily across various styles I felt that there was no need for me to try and maintain a chronology in my tribute mix and so I dip in & out of his body of solo work as well as the collaborative covers record he made with Jurado on a four-track cassette recorder back in 2010. I will truly miss this man’s art.

I will leave you with this true story. Some time just around 2012 or 2013 I rode an elevator with Paul McCartney. Through the years I’ve repeated that my biggest regret in not speaking to him wasn’t that I didn’t compliment his music both solo and with the Beatles, but that I didn’t suggest to him a musician named Richard Swift as a possible producer for any projects he might want to do. Could you imagine what beauty could have come from these two working together? Well I know you will enjoy the beauty you’ll hear when you click below.

Hello All.

Welcome to Volume Eleven of the MixTape series: The Demise Of The Mask. –(Volume One here)__(Volume Two here)__(Volume Three here)__(Volume Four here)__(Volume Five here)__(Volume Six here)__(Volume Seven here)__(Volume Eight here)__(Volume Nine here)__(Volume Ten here)-

I do hope you dig this here MixTape as it features some fine, fine music! There’s some stuff from Harry Nilsson‘s gorgeous 1973 album of classic 20th-century standards, A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night, a great tune from Karen Elson (produced by her then husband, Jack White), and two from Bruce Springsteen‘s 1973 debut: Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. To be honest it took me a long, long time to even give Springsteen a chance, until my buddy Matt Volz insisted that I listen to his first two records, and boy was he right! What a talent!

You’ll hear an 8-track demo outtake of John Lennon‘s powerful anthem, “God“, recording during the sessions for his first post-Beatles solo album, 1970’s John Lennon/Plastic Ono BandParliament is represented with “The Goose,” which features a favorite line of mine:

Now, I’m as happy as a monkey with a peanut machine
Since I found you
Speaking of the Parliament-Funkadelic collective, their resident keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell is featured here with his project Baby Elephant, which was a collaboration with Stetsasonic member/De La Soul producer Prince Paul and longtime Paul associate Don Newkirk. The Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel song here on this MixTape contains another of my favorite lines:
My only vice is the fantastic prices I charge for being eaten alive. . .
Oh and do yourself a favor and let yourself really sink in and groove with Polish jazz musician Michal Urbaniak‘s “Atma.” This is an artist I only got clued into from this song being sampled on Beastie Boys tune “The Scoop” on their brilliant 1994 LP Ill Communication. You’ll also hear Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty) and his fantastic meditation on narcissism and self-medicating, “A Bigger Paper Bag,” off of his newest LP Pure Comedy, which I’ll go on record now in May and say is the best record of 2017.
Bob Dylan is here with one of his finest compositions, “Visions Of Johanna” and you’ll hear what I believe to be David Bowie‘s most terrifying song—released on his 2013 (and sadly penultimate) record The Next Day, here are the lyrics to  “If You Can See Me :
If you can see me I can see you
I could wear your new blue shoes
I should wear your old red dress
And walk to the crossroad, so take this knife
And meet me across the river
Just chutes and ladders
And this is the kiss
American Anna fantastic Alsatian
From nowhere to nothing
And I go way back
Children swarm like thousands of bugs
Towards the light
The beacons above the hill
The stars to the West, the South, the North
And to the East
Now you can say I’ve got a gift of sorts
A fear of rear windows and swinging doors
My love of violence and tenants’ sighs
If you can see me I can see you
If you can see me I can see you
I have seen these bairns wave their fists at God
Swear to destroy the beast, stamping the ground
In their excitement for tomorrow
I could wear your new blue shoes
I should wear your old red dress
And walk to the crossroad, so take this knife
And meet me across the river
I will take your lands and all that lays beneath
The dust of cold flowers, drizzle of dark ashes
I will slaughter your kind, descend from belief
I am the spirit of greed, the lord of theft
Burn all your books and the problems they make
If you can see me I can see you
If you can see me

Yes! There’s all this and a whole bunch of other good stuff so go on down and press play !

THE DEMISE OF THE MASK (VOL 4)

–   ————-_______

Hello All.

Welcome to Volume Four of the MixTape series: The Demise Of The Mask. –(Volume One here)__(Volume Two here)__(Volume Three here)-

Along with featuring a whole slew of fine, fine tunes by the likes of John LennonTom WaitsSteve Harley & Cockney RebelAlela Diane, Otis Redding, Kamasi Washington, Uruguayan singer Vera Sienra with her wistful waltz made in collaboration with the brilliant but erratic Eduardo Mateo, and a whole lot of others–this mix contains some more songs from a few of my favorite albums of 2016. Albums like Anderson .Paak‘s Malibu with its meticulous whirl and groove; Turkish artist Gaye Su Akyol and her kinetic sophomore record Hologram Imparatorlugu (Hologram Empire); Emily’s D+Evolution by Esperanza Spalding (which is a bit like if Joni Mitchell, Zappa, and Prince collaborated on a project); the fantastic Visions Of Us On The Land, Damien Jurado‘s (and sonic collaborator Richard Swift‘s) final installment of a loose trilogy that began with 2012’s Maraqopa and then continued with 2014’s phenomenal Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Son; and also Solange‘s A Seat at the Table, which I just first listened to two days ago and was completely blown away by! Her track here on this mix–“Borderline (An Ode To Self Care)“–features production by Q-Tip, and along with his work on last year’s amazing A Tribe Called Quest record We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service he has really impressed me in this capacity.
