Hello All! Hello World!

I said well hello there. The last one had two tracks by Stockholm, Sweden band Mazarine Street from their second record, Thirteen Reasons to Believe. On this you’ll hear two from The Beast Of Mazarine Street, their 1996 debut. The little exotica noodle of “Rabbi” rolls right into their ballad “Let It Come Down,” which features guest vocals by Karin Dreijer who has gone on to achieve success with her solo project, Fever Ray. I’ve always loved the alloy of raunch and sadness expressed by this song’s lyrics, like:

So come down on my face
and I’ll eat you on the kitchen floor,
we get to the very core…
sick spirit and sticky teeth

You’ll also hear Big Mama Thornton doing her own gut-bucket, ass-kicking (literally) take on Memphis Minnie‘s “Black Rat Swing.” Big Mama Thornton was recorded in San Francisco on April 25, 1966, and is backed by Muddy Waters and his incredible band: James Cotton (harmonica), Otis Spann (piano), Sammy Lawhorn (guitar), Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson (bass), and Francis Clay (drums). I recently read an incredible article on Big Mama Thornton written by Cynthia Shearer and published in the 18th annual Southern Music issue of The Oxford American. I highly recommend you give THE THINNING OF BIG MAMA a read.

[“Big Mama,” by Cathey Miller]

[Little Richard, by Charles Burns 1992]

You’ll also hear Little Richard backed by Johnny “Guitar” Watson and produced by Larry Williams. I’ll never understand why the material this incredible performer recorded for the Okeh label in 1966 & 1967 wasn’t a huge hit, as I think it’s all fantastic! For those who don’t quite understand the cultural significance of Richard Wayne Penniman I will share this little tid-bit:
In 1956, David Bowie was not yet ten and his father would bring home the recent hit singles that made bizarre but wholly thrilling rock ‘n’ roller Little Richard a star: “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally.” Bowie later said that he had the sensational reaction of “My heart nearly burst with excitement. I’d never heard anything even resembling this. It filled the room with energy and color and outrageous defiance. I had heard God.” Even as a little boy his ambition had been set to be “a white Little Richard…..or at least his saxophone player.”

Well, you’ll hear this as well as some fantastic Duke EllingtonIggy Pop with David Bowie and Simple Minds; something from Actor, the second album by St. Vincent, released in 2009; and a whole lot more! So…

A MOUTHFUL OF PENNIES PRESENTS: NUPTIALS

Hello all,

and welcome to what will be the last post for the summer! I’ve got a special triptych-mixtape for you all today! About a week back a good friend of mine asked that I produce a few mixes for a gathering the night before his wedding. Unfortunately (like, whatever, y’know) due to technical difficulties they could not be played that evening (the entire wedding weekend, however, was absolutely fantastic!). Anyway, not one to let a good MixTape go to waste, I present them to you here. I do believe them to be real nice & easy, and tons of fun, with some great tunes that have been featured here in these pages before and some that I was planning on getting to someday.

May these serve you well here at the tail-end of the summer! So sit back, roll forward, and enjoy!

But above all–ENJOY YOURSELF!__

It’s Good to Feel you are Close to Me

It’s good to feel you are close to me in the night, love,
invisible in your sleep, intently nocturnal,
while I untangle my worries
as if they were twisted nets.

Withdrawn, your heart sails through dream,
but your body, relinquished so, breathes
seeking me without seeing me perfecting my dream
like a plant that seeds itself in the dark.

Rising, you will be that other, alive in the dawn,
but from the frontiers lost in the night,
from the presence and the absence where we meet ourselves,

something remains, drawing us into the light of life
as if the sign of the shadows had sealed
its secret creatures with flame.

A MOUTHFUL OF PENNIES PRESENTS: ON THE GOOD BLOOD (VOL. 1-3)

Hello All,

Well I’ve got another triptych treat for you here today!

A friend recently asked me to create roughly four hours worth of appropriate tunes for an event she was helping to plan and present. Unfortunately, at the last minute she couldn’t use them. However–despite being put together on some short-notice and the fact that the majority of my albums are still packed up in boxes from a recent move–what I got left holding are what I consider to be some real dope MixTapes with a nice and easy forward groove going for them.

And that’s exactly what I’d like to share with you all.

Hopefully they’ll help you bend your knees, bop your head, and swivel your hips a bit on through this whole supposed “…in like a lion and out like a lamb…showers/flowers…” business we’ve been going through.
