Hello All! Hello World!

I said well hello there. The last one had two tracks by Stockholm, Sweden band Mazarine Street from their second record, Thirteen Reasons to Believe. On this you’ll hear two from The Beast Of Mazarine Street, their 1996 debut. The little exotica noodle of “Rabbi” rolls right into their ballad “Let It Come Down,” which features guest vocals by Karin Dreijer who has gone on to achieve success with her solo project, Fever Ray. I’ve always loved the alloy of raunch and sadness expressed by this song’s lyrics, like:

 
So come down on my face
and I’ll eat you on the kitchen floor,
we get to the very core…
sick spirit and sticky teeth

You’ll also hear Big Mama Thornton doing her own gut-bucket, ass-kicking (literally) take on Memphis Minnie‘s “Black Rat Swing.” Big Mama Thornton was recorded in San Francisco on April 25, 1966, and is backed by Muddy Waters and his incredible band: James Cotton (harmonica), Otis Spann (piano), Sammy Lawhorn (guitar), Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson (bass), and Francis Clay (drums). I recently read an incredible article on Big Mama Thornton written by Cynthia Shearer and published in the 18th annual Southern Music issue of The Oxford American. I highly recommend you give THE THINNING OF BIG MAMA a read.

You’ll also hear Little Richard backed by Johnny “Guitar” Watson and produced by Larry Williams. I’ll never understand why the material this incredible performer recorded for the Okeh label in 1966 & 1967 wasn’t a huge hit, as I think it’s all fantastic! For those who don’t quite understand the cultural significance of Richard Wayne Penniman I will share this little tid-bit:
In 1956, David Bowie was not yet ten and his father would bring home the recent hit singles that made bizarre but wholly thrilling rock ‘n’ roller Little Richard a star: “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally.” Bowie later said that he had the sensational reaction of “My heart near­ly burst with excitement. I’d never heard anything even resembling this. It filled the room with energy and color and outrageous defiance. I had heard God.” Even as a little boy his ambition had been set to be “a white Little Richard…..or at least his saxophone player.”

Well, you’ll hear this as well as some fantastic Duke EllingtonIggy Pop with David Bowie and Simple Minds; something from Actor, the second album by St. Vincent, released in 2009; and a whole lot more! So…

Hello All! Hello World!

I said well hello there.

It’s certainly been a rough week or two around here, but here we are with another 80 minutes of music compiled & mixed by A Mouthful Of Pennies; yes it’s the new MixTape: Royal Jelly. As Jack Kerouac once wrote: “We seek to find new phrases; we try hard, we writhe and twist and blow; every now and then a clear harmonic cry gives new suggestions of a tune, a thought, that will someday be the only tune and thought in the world and which will raise men’s souls to joy.”

To me the trio of Prince tunes (all associated with his 1984 masterpiece Purple Rain as b-sides, and to my ear, other than the backing vocals by Sheila E., it sounds like Prince is performing all that you hear on these tracks) that open this MixTape perfectly exemplify what I wrote and quoted in my little essay about this genius back in MAY 04 2016:

Prince had plenty of confidence and little hang-ups. That’s one thing I’ve always loved about listening to his music, he was telling you that there was a true spirituality to celebrating this thing called life with “dance, music, sex, romance” or “D.M.S.R.” His former tour manager Alan Leeds was recently quoted as saying “For him the love of God and the sexual urges we feel are one and the same somehow. For him it all comes from the same root inside a human being. God planted these urges and it’s never wrong to feel that way. The urge itself is a holy urge.”

Or as Touré (author of I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became an Icon) put it: “[…] for him there was no need to separate the things we do on Saturday night from the things we do on Sunday morning.”

Plato said: Eros leads to Gnosis. As I recently read on the website, plotinus, Eros should be seen as:

[…] a liberating agent who releases and activates the creative process of the mind. Eros inspires and opens the channel of intuition to the higher and abstract understanding and communion with beauty and truth. The myth of Eros and Psyche describes in detail the inner process of transformation. In fact, Eros cannot be separated from his beloved Psyche, since they are united by a secret and sacred bond, invisible and unconscious in man. In fact, man’s psyche remains filled with erotic, sensual, carnal desires that keep him and his mind trapped on the physical plane along with his emotions and consciousness. But a seeker must transmute the attraction of Eros and awaken the bond with his psyche so that he can rise towards the “beloved,” the invisible golden thread that links his consciousness to the universal qualities of beauty and love.

The gifts of Eros affect the emotional and thought processes of humanity, especially those of a seeker who has to learn how to open up and integrate these gifts in his psyche. From the lowest and most physical levels of consciousness to the most spiritual ones, Eros remains forever present, gradually transforming the inner fire into pure light. Eros operates in every living creature, and Greek poetry and philosophy describe how nature partakes of the gift of Eros. Hence we could say that Eros’ contribution to humanity is not only inherent in man’s psyche, but that it is also involved in the process that awakens the ego to its true nature, the beauty and unconditional love of the soul.

Eros implies a yearning for unity, harmony, and completion.

Yes, most of Prince’s work was concerned with sex, but then again most of it was concerned with spirituality as well. These seem to be things he had no trouble reconciling. Yes, by others’ standards and ethics he was vulgar. Remember it was Prince’s music (“Darling Nikki” and its reference to female masturbation in particular) that was used by Mary “Tipper” Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) as an example of unsuitable content when pushing for the use of a Parental Advisory label for recorded music. However, with Prince the erotic might be visceral, explicit, but it was rarely truly crude or misogynist. When it came to women (and God) he was always seeking to find “the answer to the question of u.” He adored and respected women and felt a sense of wonder in their presence. Particularly Prince respected women as artists and for their intelligence. He respected and acknowledged female sexuality. Prince wanted to make love with them; Prince wanted to fuck them. Like he says to the woman in question in the eight minute epic “Joint 2 Joint”: “You’re making me proud to be a human being.”

That is not negated by his lustful follow through and the come-on:

And if we’re ever naked in the same machine/I’m gonna lick it, baby, joint 2 joint

Above all, what I love about listening to his work is that yes he wanted you to believe he is a sexy motherfucker, but I think he wanted you the listener–no matter what or who you are–to fully appreciate that yeah you’re a sexy motherfucker too!

Also on this here mix you’ll hear another song from Alela Diane’s brand new and truly wonderful record, Cusp. Of the record she has said,“This music is about motherhood. Even just by saying that, it feels like people will write you off. It’s like you’ve suddenly lost the charm of being youthful and even attainable––you’ve been commoditized as available. There is not a big place in the music industry for 30-something women with kids making music. Maybe we can create that space.” I highly recommend this one.

All The Night Without Love” the 2006 tune by Elvis Perkins features not only some lyrics that I adore, but more so I’m always amazed by the cadence and phrasing he uses to deliver such lines as:

 
“Touch

on the 
magnetic 
athletic insole sheet
and it goes 
all its life without love
Tell me can you 
imagine going to
“Got milk? 
dot 
com”
Do you go 
all the night without love
without love?

There’s the abrasive “Long Way Home” that closes the 2001 LP ShangriLa Dee Da by Stone Temple Pilots. Despite its caustic sound I’ve always appreciated Dean DeLeo’s contorted guitar that accompanies the song’s fade and Weiland’s repetition of:

Tell me
Is it more of the same and
Where can I find it?
Tell me
Is she fighting for air and
Where does she come from?
Tell me
 

Oh and there’s two sonic oddities by the musician Anon, who also sometimes went by the moniker Wynn. His great new project Hidden Beams is just making its debut and you can listen and learn a bit more about that over here.

Hello All! Hello World!

I said well hello there, who knew that Doomsday would fall anywhere near a Tuesday, and who needs the Spoofity app when you’ve got another hour and 20 minutes of music from A Mouthful Of Pennies? So here’s   _Toss-Up_ the latest A.M.O.P. Mixtape!

This one feature’s “Lemonade” the closing song of Blind Melon’s 1995 (and technically final) record Soup.
This is an album that I’ve always held as one of the most brilliant and most under-appreciated of the nineties. I return to it again and again. Featuring funky riffs with a cosmic hillbilly tweak and a Dixie-twist, odd changes in time signatures, and Shannon Hoon’s sweet and sour lysergic lyrics that deliver their sentiments with a pin-point precision of images, it’s a real work of art. Speaking of delivery, I adore Hoon’s vocals with their giddy rasp as if his lungs were delirious to sing these songs. The album was recorded in New Orleans in 1994 with gifted producer/mixer/engineer Andy Wallace (that’s him eating soup on the LP cover). As this was after Hoon’s multiple stints in drug rehabilitation programs the city might not necessarily have been a healthy choice but it certainly lent itself to a truly dynamic body of work. This LP might be the closest the nineties ever came to producing something akin to the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St. It was truly adventurous with sound; shamefully they were not rewarded for it. Sadly, two months after the album’s release, Hoon was found dead in the band’s tour bus. This is a work that is dark and yet a delight to sing and dance along to. For example there’s the hopped-up banjo and kazoo jam “Skinned” written from the perspective of serial killer Ed Gein, and the haunting, melodic “Car Seat (God’s Presents)” about Susan Smith, who killed her children by driving her car into a lake in Union, South Carolina. Then there are these 3 fantastic singles (note that the”Galaxie” video features psychologist, writer, and psychedelic advocate Timothy Leary as the mad scientist,aka “Mr Time Warp”).

I do recall that in my younger days “Lemonade” served as a bit of a mantra or an ethos (not necessarily a healthy one) to help me navigate through the world:
There’s such a thing as self opinion
And this far down South I have no self-control
If anbody else feels like a nobody
Well then your gonna have to look out for you
I’ll color green everything believed in
But I keep screaming for my glass of lemonade
 –
I walk around and it feels good to be movin’
The breeze that’s blowin’ through cannot be found
Jump on the trolley that’s headed for all the hollering
And then you’re gonna have to look out for you
In desperate need of a little more religion
To nurse your God like point of view…

You might be more familiar with Wilson as the brilliant producer of the 3 Father John Misty records as well as the great Double Roses by Karen Elson released last year. Wilson’s own albums are most definitely worth checking out as well. So do that.

Hello All.

Welcome to the latest A.M.O.P. Mixtape: (Dominion) Swords, Cups, and Other Accouterments. I must say this and the prior ([A Crush Of Curtains]:) have been my favorite mixtapes I’ve created in awhile, in terms of feeling like I achieved a mood and texture I envisioned at the get-go. I think it’s pretty clear at this point that I don’t often use the platform of this blog to make party-mixes, but more likely create MixTapes to listen to when alone, such as driving, walking, or when attempting some form of artistic expression. ALWAYS: “ABOVE MY GROUND” BY LANDLADY

Those of you familiar with these pages and my writing style surely know by now that I am prone to florid hyperbole and literary detours, but please bear with me when I state:

Today I present to you just about the best new song I’ve heard all year.

A few years back I worked as the doorman for The 55 Bar, a relatively small basement club in Greenwich Village that tended to host some of the most talented musicians in the modern scenes of jazz, blues, and the variegated spectrum between the two. Now, the roster of tremendous talent that frequented this establishment is something I will certainly get around to featuring in these pages. However, my nights there generally consisted of crowd control, selling tickets, setting up the stage and equipment, negotiating both the junkies shambling from Christopher Park across the street and the over-stimulated homosexuals from the surrounding clubs, listening to some of the most extraordinary live music of my lifetime, and drinking my weight in Maker’s Mark.

That doorway next to the stairs is where you could find me huddled through most long winter nights.

Now, flash-forward to this past June 7th, when I attended the “A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Levon Helm” tribute concert at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY.

I must say that the major draw for me was that a contemporary songwriter whose work I love, Elvis Perkins, was scheduled to perform. He did not disappoint as he happened to play a rendition of one of my favorite The Band songs—Music from Big Pink outtake: “Yazoo Street Scandal” (featured here for my own Helm tribute).

Although I was familiar by name only with the majority of performers listed—The Felice Brothers, Shivaree’s Ambrosia Parsley, The New PornographersA.C Newman, Diamond Doves (who are the “Dearland” component of Elvis Perkins in Dearland), Elegant Too, and others—that night featured various configurations of these musicians performing spirited renditions of Helm tunes together. The sense of camaraderie on stage was magnificent, permeating the venue, and leaving the crowd with the impression that they experienced something joyful, which—regardless of many a band’s obvious talent—is something too rarely experienced at a concert these days. This sentiment perfectly complimented the democratic spirit of Levon Helm’s music.

Now, while my wife and I watched the show from the stage’s edge (and by the wobbly video above you can tell we were dancing and singing along too), there was one talented player who was incredibly familiar: A lanky-limbed kid with a chin and nose made prominent through contrast with a thick black mustache and chops, who continually switched from being a member of the horn section to playing the piano, and occasionally conducting the crowd while singing lead. My Wife (who also worked at The 55) and I were convinced that this kid must’ve played there—most likely alongside the singular saxophonist David Binney, was my guess. So as the show ended we approached him and as it turns out, he was not a performer at The 55, but a regular: one of those young students who, despite their good manners and apparent respect for the music, always mildly annoyed the servers; annoyed because, with these customers’ steady penchant for only ordering coffee, soda, and tea, the bartenders knew there was not much of a tip headed their way. However, after catching up through a brief but humorous chitchat (during which he displayed a cheerful demeanor and a gracious acceptance of each compliment) I knew that this kid named Adam Schatz was someone worth cocking an ear towards in the future.

With his words and mannerisms marked by an affable bounce, Adam Schatz explained that he was responsible for arranging all the horns that evening, and (after first being sure to give the majority of the credit to the event’s organizer and Diamond Doves’ drummer, Nick Kinsey) that the show itself was in part presented through the non-profit organization he founded: Search & Restore. As he states on the organization’s website, it is “committed to bringing the artists and audiences of new jazz and improvised music together in new ways, while never forgetting it’s DIY roots.” In a sense the organization operates as a promotional tool and resource for a whole slew of talented artists, but to my mind it seems to exist as well to remind the world that the culture of Jazz need not be relegated to archives and museums. It need not be a relic, xanthous with age and only admired through the protective glass of static sentiment and tradition. Music is a protean organism, it declares, and one that can be fully enjoyed out there this very night. In other words, as he stated when speaking to Ben Ratliff for The New York Times in 2010: “My mission is to bring people together around art. We don’t care who you are or how old you are. We just want you to get down.”

It was this very same positive attitude that made me wish to explore his music further. As it turns out, he seems to be pretty prolific, and certainly busy. Along with running Search & Restore, he participates in numerous music projects, including the Brooklyn based twelve-piece afrobeat group, Zongo Junction; the nine-piece psychedelic soul band, The Shoe Ins; playing self-described “zombie Jazz” with the band Father Figures; and the “melodic mayhem” of the improvisational duo Blast Off!; as well as performing solo under the moniker of Mrs. Adam Schatz (in honor of his “invisible and imaginary wife”). Catching a show of the latter this past Saturday, I must say these solo shows are incredibly amusing, filled with spirited asides, improvisation, and audience participation. In addition to all this he recently informed me that he would be joining the brilliantly idiosyncratic band, Man Man.

However, today’s song comes from yet another group of his, Landlady. This six-piece group is a dynamic exploration of what can be achieved through the big fun of pop music. Released as a digital single this past month of September, “Above My Ground” is, as I stated above, just about the best new song I’ve heard all year. Delicately constructed, each element of the song is flawlessly implemented to arouse sincere pathos in the listener. It does so without resorting to plunging into the emotional schlock and pompous mewling many pop groups rely on in the hopes of receiving a little empathy in response to their disingenuously contrived ballad. Exquisitely hypnotic—through its ambient chiming, martial drumming, and the warm yelp of Schatz’s vocal, alternately ascending and descending the steps of each phrase in perfect rhythm, there is a true human quality to this song. This is a current I hear in the majority of his music; even considering certain reeling heights of dissonance, or the more manic Muppet moments of some of the compositions, the listener always gets the sense that there is an actual person there behind the curtains of these sounds. This quality is particularly evident as the song builds towards the chant of its crescendo; a chant that—to paraphrase his words when encouraging the audience to sing-along—is meant to be shouted at the heavens so that things can be OK, at least for the moment.

Below are the two videos the group released for this song, each with its own organic focus. I leave it up to you to decide which one you prefer, but with a song this infectious, I recommend you play one, wait a few minutes and then play the other.
