Hello All.

Welcome to the latest A.M.O.P. Mixtape:_Nidos (Vol. 2)

___=

As we are at the end of the year I guess I should provide a list of what were my favorite records released in 2017 (as opposed to including some of my favorite music I purchased this year, which would be older stuff like records by Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Tom Waits, and the amazing two disc Judee Sill compilation Abracadabra: The Asylum Years). So here straight off the top of my head (and I’m sure I’ll be forgetting something):

Pure Comedy by Father John Misty

Modern Kosmology by Jane Weaver

Double Roses by Karen Elson

I Tell A Fly by Benjamin Clementine

Masseduction by St. Vincent

La Saboteuse by Yazz Ahmed

No Shape by Perfume Genius

Interplanetary Class Classics by The Moonlandingz

Foreverywhere by StevenSteven

Triplicate by Bob Dylan

Add Violence [EP] by Nine Inch Nails

The most disappointing record of the year was without a doubt Colors by Beck (I am an enormous fan of his work), which—in it’s dull compression, soundtrack-to-a-hip-new-laptop-operating-system-commercial flavor—really comes across to me as some sort of Qliphoth to St. Vincent’s wonderful use of manic pop in Masseduction.

By far my favorite movie of the year (and one of the best I’ve ever seen) was Jordan Peele‘s Get Out:

Oh, and the greatest television show of all time also happened to be released in 2017: Mark Frost‘s and David Lynch‘s Twin Peaks: The Return

Also below you’ll find a concluded list of things I read (or re-read) so far since January of this year, 2017. You’ll find the more recent things towards the bottom.  I am just about done reading an absolutely stunning collection of poetry, My Dinner With Ron Jeremy by Kendra DeColo (published by Jack White’s Third Man Books).

As I just started Alan Moore‘s massive novel Jerusalem (over 600,000 words long and over 1200 pages, and what David M. Higgins called in the Los Angeles Review of Books “a glorious mythology of loss”) I don’t believe there could be any room to add to the 2017 list.

Speaking of Lit, 2017 is the year I discovered that Angela Carter just might be the greatest writer I’ve ever read! However, these works listed here are all one’s that I truly enjoyed and/or loved (there’s a lot of great children’s books as I am both a father and a children’s librarian). I highly recommend them all!

The Donor
–Judee Sill
I’ll chase ’em to the bottom
Till I’ve finally caught ’em
Dreams fall deep
Where voices come a-chimin’
Moanin’ and a-rhymin’
Warning me
Their words are ringin’ and a-whinin’
Hear ’em weep
Songs from so deep
While I’m sleepin’
Seep in
Sweepin’ over me
Still the echo’s achin’
“Leave us not forsaken”
Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison
Kyrie eleison, eleison
Eleison, eleison
Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison
So sad, and so true
That even shadows come
And hum the requiem
O waters of the moon
Your vapors swirls and swoon
Your wake is wide
And sorrow’s like an arrow
Shootin’ straight and narrow
Aimin’ true, it’s sting goes
Reachin’ to the marrow
Silence cried
Now songs from so deep
While I’m sleepin’
Seep in…
Sweepin’ over me
Still the echo’s achin’
“Leave us not forsaken”
Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison
Kyrie eleison, eleison
Eleison, eleison
Kyrie eleison, kyrie eleison
So sad, and so true
That even shadows come
And hum the requiem

THE DEMISE OF THE MASK (VOL 5)

–   ————-_______

__________—

Hello All.

Welcome to Volume Five of the MixTape series: The Demise Of The Mask. –(Volume One here)__(Volume Two here)__(Volume Three here)__(Volume Four here)-

Featuring certain songs by Stevie WonderCurtis Mayfield, Al GreenDory Previn, and even featuring the title track from Bill Fay‘s brilliant but apocalyptic and oppressive record of 1971, Time of the Last Persecution–I’m sure that this MixTape is a somewhat result of a residue from our national nativity ceremony. I can recall once in Montréal someone made a derisive remark about religion while jerking a thump at the enormous neon crucifix hung in the night sky. Quickly but calmly, my good friend Frankie responded: “Hey, some people need that…and that’s a real thing, y’know?…some people need that to get by.”

At that moment I thought: “fair enough.”

Well, among a whole lot of other good tunes The Demise Of The Mask (Vol. 5) also features the songs “Misbehave” &  “She Might Get Shot” both taken from  Juan Wauters‘ fantastic 2015 record,  Who Me? I know he’s got a new one coming up someday soon so be sure to keep your ears open for that because I can tell you it’s a beauty!

If you dig the mix then please feel free to pass & post it along; if you dig an artist then please support them and go out and pick up some of their stuff. Oh, If you dig the blog overall there’s always the “FOLLOW BLOG VIA EMAIL” button somewhere down at the bottom

THE DEMISE OF THE MASK (VOL 1)

Hello All,

Here’s the first volume of a new series of MixTapes: The Demise Of The Mask.

This one here features “The Future,” which is perhaps my favorite tune by the late great Leonard Cohen (R.I.P.), It’s fascinating to me that his cold vision of a future of murder is one where there is no longer any privacy, definitions, or truths and where all are completely ignorant to even the idea of certain spiritual mechanisms like redemption, repentance, and resurrection: When they said repent, I wonder what they meant…

Of course the song also features one of Cohen’s finest lines and one that serves as a fracture of light in it’s vicious but torpid slab of a landscape: Love’s the only engine of survival.

Oh the mix features as well as some fantastic new stuff by Saul Williams, Devendra Banhart, Iggy Pop, and Radiohead. Oh and it’s also got a lovely number called “Love On The Brain” by Rihanna that my little boy just loves slow spinning to. All this and a whole lot more flow! So press play and enjoy yourself! And as always:

If you dig the mix then please feel free to pass & post it along; if you dig an artist then please support them and go out and pick up some of their stuff.

Some Situation and Sunder During Days Eight

Thru Fourteen On The Abundant Earth

.——————–

The recluse,

in his swollen tower,

sings of the indigo evenings and the soft hour

our

lives are spent searching thirsty for.

.

Leaning over the parapet

of his tower, the recluse gets

irate at this metropolis

of candles lit, and so, with lips

pursed, he spits, this done with the hopes

to extinguish at least one single flame tethered by a black wick.

.

D

O

W

N

.

.

.

Out in the field, beasts of the earth consume vegetable meat;

Lilith completes another cruel labor, amniotic

fluid and blood splattered on her ankles, on her bare feet.

Anticipating from Adam an alimony check,

she lies prostrate in the dust, braids her raven tresses, waits,

and proceeds to procreate her sundown breed

within vision of Eden’s combustion gate .

.

Bill Whistle

and The Skeleton Crew

sketch, with fingers broken,

undergarments below

emerald gowns

on

the ladies of passing fashion.

.

Poor Lester

gets his rest while within

the convalescent tents

pitched amongst the vapor

caravans

that

roll along a paper trail of tears.

He is hoping for a cure

for his tuberculosis.

Still, when asked “how’s it goin?” he’ll say

“Everything is coming up roses.”

.

Thessaly

entered the gallery

with her wardrobe bible

tucked under her left arm,

while all the double-parked cars sat idle

in the warm sunset soot of monoxide armor.

.

She possessed

elaborate aesthetics,

like an ornate train wreck,

meticulous design,

down to each

fine

detail: her eyes, blue steel off the rail;

all else, fluid limbs of collision flames;

curves of metal awry, out of reach.

The cathedral bells knell for Monday morning mass

Preserved in

fluids, a scorpion

serves as a belt buckle,

where her two thumbs are hooked

over the amber glass.

One and all

look.

She ensnares every pliant eye

in the iron of her gestures.

.

The Recluse drops his cowboy boot’s wooden heel upon a cockroach

.

Poor Lester

coughs blossoms of blood from the lungs when he sees this blonde disaster.

The skeletal cool kids abscond behind a magazine curtain,

where they all paint their sex organs with the scent of neon cologne.

Bill’s jaw drops as his lips fall slack, and he remains stuck uncertain.

He could not help but rubberneck and question the motives, divine,

in the bedlam of her approach.

Hello All! Those that know me know that there were three living artists that mean the world to me: David Bowie, Prince, and Bob Dylan. Thus far 2016 is turning out to be a rough year.

I’ve been hesitating to post the following; despite Prince’s sudden and shocking death I remain terrified that the purple stiletto heel of his legal department will come down on my blog and shut it down (which is why I so rarely post Prince tunes).  However, I wanted to share something to help celebrate a man whose entire artistic output was truly a celebration of the creative act and of life itself.

Only an artist as audacious and idiosyncratic as Prince could so seductively urge you to disregard all falsely imposed limits, to feel how you honestly feel, love how you honestly love, and “get off until you make the house shake/Shake your body ’til your neighbors stare at cha!” As Tom Hawking poignantly put it, “Prince was the opposite of death.” Prince’s music was alive; while deceit, instituted distortions of identities, and apathetic hearts are all only spiritual death.

As he sings on the 2001 LP The Rainbow Children (which despite its less than enthusiastic reception by critics has long been one of my favorites for its dynamic experimentation with jazz and its hallowed, optimistic view of the human race):

Every time I watch “The Other People News”
I c a false picture of myself, another one of u
They try 2 tell us what we want, what 2 believe
Didn’t that happen in the Garden
When somebody spoke 2 Eve?

And then Prince declares in his confident and funky falsetto:

But I’m willing 2 do The Work!

And how could he not follow with the obvious question:

Tell me now – what about u?

A great deal of this work for him, of course, was his music.

Although it seemed like an impossible task–as this tribute mixtape here is but a handful of my favorite tracks throughout the years by this genius–I do hope you enjoy the hell out of it and that it illustrates a bit of what I’m talking about. As Prince himself said at a phenomenal 2 & 1/2+ hour concert I attended: “so many hits, so little time.”

PRINCE (HAT WITH CHAINS) PHOTO BY HERB RITTS (1991)

The man was one of a kind. To me his music and personality was so singular, yet of a universal soul. As he says in “For You,” his work was created “with love, sincerity and deepest care.”

Prince also had such a wonderful sense of humor and a whimsical flavor. That is the resource behind much of his albums like the (unreleased) The Black Album and lines sung in such splendid melodies like “Ain’t no particular sign I’m more compatible with/I just want your extra time and your…Kiss” or when he pleads to his woman not to leave him to sleep on the couch with, “Its so undignified to sleep alone/Oh yes it is/That’s what all the people Ain’t got nobody do.”

Only Prince could come up with a song as odd, tender, and earnest as “The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker” where the lessons learned by the act of listening to Joni Mitchell while taking a bubble bath with a stranger (during which he insists that he keep his pants on in the tub as he’s “kind of going with someone”) can help improve his sour mood when he has to return to “a violent room” where he was “fightin’ with lovers past.” With its peculiar narrative I hold that tune to be amongst the sweetest and most genuine ever created, and so I paste the lyrics below so that you may read along when the mix spins that up:

Dorothy was a waitress on the promenade
She worked the night shift
Dishwater blonde, tall and fine
She got a lot of tips

Well, earlier I’d been talkin’ stuff in a violent room
Fightin’ with lover’s past
I needed someone with a quicker wit than mine
Dorothy was fast

Well, I ordered – “Yeah, let me get a fruit cocktail, I ain’t to hungry”
Dorothy laughed
She said – “It sound like a real man to me (you’re kinda cute)
You’re kinda cute, you wanna take a bath?” (Do you wanna, do you wanna?) … Bath?

Oh, I said – “Cool, but I’m leavin’ my pants on (What you say?)
Cuz I’m kinda goin’ with someone”
She said – “Sound like a real man to me
Mind if I turn on the radio?”

“Oh, my favorite song,” she said
And it was Joni singing, “Help me, I think I’m falling”
(Drring) The phone rang and she said
“Whoever’s calling can’t be as cute as you”
Right then and there I knew I was through (Dorothy Parker was cool)

Well

My pants were wet, they came off
But she didn’t see the movie cuz she hadn’t read the book first

Instead she pretended she was blind
An affliction brought on by a witch’s curse
Dorothy made me laugh (ha ha, ha ha)
I felt much better so I went back to the violent room
(Tell us what you did, what you did) Let me tell you what I did

I took another bubble bath with my pants on
All the fighting stopped
Next time I’ll do it sooner
This is the ballad of Dorothy Parker
(Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker)
Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker

Well
Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker
Well
Oh

Only Prince could create something as painfully sincere, weird, traumatic and yet somehow still so funky as “Papa,” where a cruel father crucifies all the dandelions before he beats on his four year old child, points a shotgun up in the sky and screams in anguish “How come I don’t love my woman?”…but then Prince warns: “Don’t abuse children, or else they turn out like me.”

And then here he reminds you what his music has always been about–the joy to be had in life–by concluding that song with uptempo fuzzfunk and:

Fair 2 partly crazy, deep down we’re all the same
Every single 1 of us knows some kind of pain
In the middle of all that’s crazy, this 1 fact still remains
If u love somebody, your life won’t be in vain
And there’s always a rainbow, at the end of every rain!

Prince was certainly enigmatic but he would always look you directly in the eye. He boldly declared to hell with all your labels with the words: I’m not a woman. I’m not a man. I am something that you’ll never understand/I’m not your lover. I’m not your friend. I am something that you’ll never comprehend.

In both subject matter and composition, no one wrote songs quite like Prince! I really believe that Prince was the most proficient musician of our lifetime, but no matter what style (and he flirted with and mutated them all) he always exercised a true economy to his songs: every note or absence served a purpose. Although he could likely school anyone on guitar, chief among his instruments in my opinion was the voice, which I think this mix illustrates well with the gorgeous and just stunning vocal interplay to be heard in tracks like “Dark,” “Count the Days,” “Adore,” and the glorious “The Beautiful Ones.” (He opened the show I attended with this last number, as the phenomenal Misty Copeland performed a ballet atop his purple piano!)

There was such an extraordinary amount of talent packed into his 5ft 2in frame. As he says with self-deprecation in the funky and funny monologue “Bob George” (a song I had so hoped to squeeze into this mix) Prince was “that skinny motherfucker with the high voice.” Yet, let’s face it this little weirdo in purple was one sexy motherfucker as well!

Prince had plenty of confidence and little hang-ups. That’s one thing I’ve always loved about listening to his music, he was telling you that there was a true spirituality to celebrating this thing called life with “dance, music, sex, romance” or “D.M.S.R.” His former tour manager Alan Leeds was recently quoted as saying “For him the love of God and the sexual urges we feel are one and the same somehow. For him it all comes from the same root inside a human being. God planted these urges and it’s never wrong to feel that way. The urge itself is a holy urge.”

Or as Touré (author of I Would Die 4 U: Why Prince Became an Icon) put it: “[…] for him there was no need to separate the things we do on Saturday night from the things we do on Sunday morning.”

Plato said: Eros leads to Gnosis. As I recently read on the website, plotinus, Eros should be seen as:

[…] a liberating agent who releases and activates the creative process of the mind. Eros inspires and opens the channel of intuition to the higher and abstract understanding and communion with beauty and truth. The myth of Eros and Psyche describes in detail the inner process of transformation. In fact, Eros cannot be separated from his beloved Psyche, since they are united by a secret and sacred bond, invisible and unconscious in man. In fact, man’s psyche remains filled with erotic
